PhIlip Hansen, Cellist


Philip Hansen has inspired audiences on four continents with concerts that cross an array of genres.  A California native, he has performed with orchestra all the major concerto repertoire written for his instrument.  Phil is currently the Principal Cellist of the Calgary (Canada) Philharmonic Orchestra:  http://www.cpo-live.com.


The musical venture Phil's Café has won the hearts of fans with Phil's unique blend of styles. The mission of Phil’s Café is to present intimate concert events in the aid of the worthiest of causes.


Phil’s CD Bragatissimo, comprising music of tango nuevo (Piazzolla et al), earned highest acclaim from critics, earning coast-to-coast play through broadcasts on CBC and NPR (USA).  


Long an enthusiastic educator of music, Phil is on the faculty of the Académie Musicale Internationale in Provence, France.  He has been a guest of the Beijing and Shanghai Conservatories of Music as artist-in-residence and teacher to China's top young musicians.

 

Phil has performed the suites by J S Bach for violoncello solo in concert on several occasions, employing the rare cello piccolo.  Under his leadership as its artistic director and cellist, the USA-based ensemble fEARnoMUSIC performed across the US, earning accolades and support from major foundations for that group's innovative projects.

 

Phil's influential teachers include Steven Doane, Lynn Harrell, Jürgen deLemos, Joseph DiTullio, Patricia Pinkston, and Delores Weksler. Among prizes and honours, Phil was twice selected to participate in the prestigious Piatigorsky Seminar for Cellists, providing for intensive study with Yo-Yo Ma and William Pleeth.
